Join seminar: A Future for Democracy in the UAE?

The seminar will be held on March 22nd at 6:30 pm, in the House of Commons kindly hosted by Grahame Morris MP.

We will be joined by a range of speakers including Courtney Freer from LSE who has worked on the rise of Al-Islah in the UAE and Anas Altikriti, discussing the UAE within the context of democracy in the Middle East.

The calls for democratic reform in 2011 came in the wake of the Arab spring. Activists and social reformers and signed a petition calling for democratic elections, an independent judiciary and legislative powers to be granted to the Federal National Council. This petition was met with increasing hostility from the authorities and the five years since then have seen arrests, detentions and trials in response to these calls.

5 years later we are looking at the issues facing democratic reform in the UAE. What future is their for reform and what impact does the political environment have on the UAE and the MENA region today?

Join us to discuss whether there is a future for democracy in the UAE
