Ahmed Mansoor sentenced to 10 years jail

Prominent human rights defender Ahmed Mansoor was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for slowly exercising his right of freedom of expression.

The winner of the 2015 Laureate Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders Mansoor has been arbitrarily detained by the UAE authorities from his house on 20 March 2017.

His arrest follows his calls for the release of prisoners of conscience including Osama Al-Najjar, who was due to be released on March 17 but remains imprisoned.

He was brought to trial after more than a year in detention without charge. He appeared before court in three times without a lawyer.

Ahmed's arrest and trial is in contravention of international law against enforced disappearances and violates his rights to freedom of expression.
