Al Karama foundation calling for a new trial to the case of Mohamed Az

Al Karama Foundation UAE, a Geneva-based and independent human rights organisation, has recently requested from the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) to shed the light over the case of Mohamed Az, A Syrian national sentenced to 15 years in prison after going through an unfair trial.

The foundation urged the WGAD to call on the Emirati authority as to impel it to start a new trial, one that would be fair and just.

It is important to note that Mohamed Az was kept in secret detention for four month after being arrested without a warrant while he was on his way to Dubai accompagned with his mother. Officers wearing civilian clothes just sized him then searched his place and took him to a disclosed location. Under torture, Mohamed was forced to say unreal confessions like the fact of him supporting Ahrar el Sham.

While standing before the Federal supreme court, he was sentenced to 15 years of prison on the charge of supporting a terrorist organisation , this court was described by the Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers as "in breach of international human rights standards."

The court turned deaf ears to all of Mohamed's allegations of being tortured and beaten. It also rejected the arguments brought by Mohamad's defence after the latter mentioned that their client had no legal assistance during interrogations because the 4th article of the criminal code only allowed the presense of the lawyer in the trial.

Mohamed was a resident in the UAE and went through an extremely unjust experience like many other nationals and foreigners.
