Alia Abdel Nour: HRW voices concern over human rights in the UAE

Human Rights Watch have expressed deep concern over the human rights situation in the UAE following the death of cancer-stricken female prisoner Alia Abdel Nour.

Abdel Nour died on May 4, 2019 of breast cancer after being deprived of adequate medical care over the past three years.

“The tragedy of her death in detention speaks volumes about the current state of human rights in the UAE,” said Michael Page, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.

“UAE authorities showed just how cruel they can be by denying Alia Abdel Nour the chance to spend her last days with her family,” he added.

“This case exemplifies why the UAE’s self-dubbed ‘Year of Tolerance’ is just another publicity stunt aimed at whitewashing the country’s deeply repressive policies,” Page said.
