Amnesty calls on Emirati authorities to quash Ahmed Mansoor’s prison sentence

Amnesty International called on Thursday on Emirati authorities to quash the sentence issued against leading human rights activist Ahmed Mansoor and immediately release him.

The international rights group said that Mansoor was sentenced for “expressing his peaceful views on social media and speaking up against human rights violations in the UAE.”

Earlier Wednesday, an Emirati court has sentenced Ahmed Mansour to 10 years in prison for belittling Abu Dhabi’s “status and prestige” on social-media platforms.

The court also fined the activist 1 million Emirati dirhams (roughly $272,000).

Amnesty International has described the activist as a “prisoner of conscience” and has repeatedly called for his release.
