Charles Ayoub explains brief Dubai detention

Charles Ayoub, editor-in-chief of the Lebanese newspaper As-Diyar, clarified the circumstances of his brief arrest at Dubai airport following reports he was detained.

He announced following his release that it was linked to a spat on WhatsApp with an executive at media conglomerate Rotana.

Ayoub said upon arriving in Dubai to visit his daughter and son-in-law, he was detained briefly for questioning in relation to a lawsuit filed by Salem Hindi, director of Rotana, based on the pair’s online fracas.

“The matter did not merit this level of complaint,” Ayoub said, the state-run National News Agency reported. He added that he was set free after being held at the airport for two hours and questioned by police for four hours.

Ayoub thanked President Michel Aoun and other Lebanese leaders for showing concern with his case.
