Civil Societies and Rights Groups Concerned for Secret UAE Prisons in South Yemen

Monaseroon Foundation For Rights and Freedoms along with Civil conglomerate for development and freedoms have been following with great concern the local and international reports about human rights violations committed by Emirati forces and the affiliated militia in the south of Yemen against Yemeni citizens detained in “secret detention centers” run by the Emirati forces and the affiliated militia.

Several reports including reports of Human Rights Watch stated that: “The UAE is reported to run some of these detention facilities and to have moved high-profile detainees outside the country, including to a base it has in Eritrea.” and that: “The Security Belt and Hadrami Elite forces have used excessive force during arrests and raids, detained family members of wanted suspects to pressure them to “voluntarily” turn themselves in, arbitrarily arrested and detained men and boys, detained children with adults, and forcibly disappeared dozens.”

The rights organisations condemn in a statement issued Sunday these inhuman practices that violate international human rights laws criminalizing these practices.

"We are surprised that the U.A.E and its forces in Yemen commit these inhuman practices that oppose completely the rationalizations the U.A.E government used and promoted to intervene in Yemen," the statement reads.

The statement also urged international community, regional and international human rights institutions to take their moral responsibility and exert pressure on the Emirati government to stop these violations and to refer all individual involved in these violations to justice.
