Emirati prisoner kept in detention despite the completion of his sentence

Emirati prisoner of conscience, Abd al-Wahed al-Badi, was supposed to be freed in March 2018, after completing a five-year sentence. Yet, the UAE authorities refuse to release him.

Al-Badi was arrested on 26 March 2013 for his human rights advocacy. He was later sentenced to five years in prison after an unfair trial marred with allegations of torture.

He is now being held without any legal justification. This type of administrative detention is considered arbitrary and violates international standards of due process.
