The European Union closely follows Ahmed Mansoor case

The European Union declared its commitment to follow closely the case of the Emirati human rights defender Ahmed Mansoor who has been sentenced to ten-year in prison.

The statement came after an Emirati court upheld on the New Year’s eve a ten-year sentence against Ahmed Mansoor.

The European Union will continue to follow closely the case of Ahmed Mansoor and will in its talks with the UAE authorities seek for his case to be reconsidered, the statement reads.

The European Union said that it has not received any information on the appeals process, its timing, and the possibility to observe the trial.

“We believe that no one shall be detained merely on the grounds of peacefully expressing his or her opinions.”

The rights to freedom of opinion and freedom of expression, including on social networks, as they are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are key principles that we will continue to stand up for, according to the statement.
