ICBU calls for boycott of Dubai 2020 Global Goal Live event

The International Campaign to Boycott the UAE (ICBE) has called on Global Citizen to reconsider its decision to host the 2020 Global Goal Live event in Dubai.

Global Goal Live is one of the world’s largest humanitarian events. It attracts celebrity performers from around the world in an effort to raise the global profile of poverty and increase the international response.

The ICBE strongly condemns the decision, on the grounds that the UAE has played a significant role in causing the Yemen crisis to become the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.

Saudi/UAE-led coalition forces in Yemen have contributed to the prolonged and escalating conflict. The coalition has been accused of war crimes including indiscriminate airstrikes on civilians, the diversion of military technology, arbitrary arrests and torture of prisoners. Within their own territory, freedom of expression and civic space are severely limited as the Emirati government continues its systematic crackdown on human rights defenders, activists, journalists and critics.

“It is true shame that the UAE is allowed to participate in the humanitarian movement to fight poverty, whilst it continues to carry out war crimes in Yemen for over four years”, ICBU said in their statement.
