The ICJHR Addresses an Open Letter to the Dignitaries and Officials of the UAE Regarding Human Rights Violations

The International Center for Justice and Human Rights (ICJHR) in Geneva has addressed a number of Emirati officials and dignitaries in a letter that includes three parts:

The ICJHR firstly catalogued the gross human rights violations that have been perpetrated by Emirati officials recently. The document references many instances where political activists, human rights defenders and bloggers have been subjected to torture and ill-treatment at the hands of state authorities, in which their phyical and moral integraty, and their right to be treated be dignity, has been seriously infringed by the Emirati state. The letter documents a myriad of such cases which include; torture in secret detention centers, enforced disappearances, degrading treatment in prisons, arbitrary deprivation of nationality and unjustified placement in counseling centers.

The second part of the letter recalls the provisions of the UAE Constitution. This guarantees certain rights and freedoms that the UAE authorities regularly breach. The document also draws upom further commitments Emirati officials have made to human rights in recent years, such as ratifying the Covention against Torture and other relevant international standards, specifically the commitments it made during the 2013 Human Rights Periodic Review. However none of this pertains to the facts on the ground in the UAE, where Emirati state authorities regularly breach these conventions and treaties to which it is a signatory.

Finally, The International Center for Justice and Human Rights have called on the officials and dignitaries of the United Arab Emirates to intervene and address these concerns in a more substantive and thorough manner. The ICJHR call upon UAE authorities to cease violating the rights of political activists, jurists and bloggers, and to abide by international treaties and accelerate the implementation of the commitments it made in 2013.
