More than 14,000 persons signed petition calling for Ahmed Mansoor's release

Amnesty International launched an online petition calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the prominent human rights defender Ahmed Mansoor from UAE jails.

More than 14,000 persons have signed the petition which aims to reach 20,000 signatories.

Ahmed Mansoor, a prisoner of conscience, detained on March 20 for simply exercising his rights of freedom of expression and association.

On March 28, UN human rights experts considered Mansoor’s arrest and detention as a direct attack on the legitimate work of human rights defenders in the UAE.

"Mr Mansoor’s outstanding work in the protection of human rights and the advancement of democracy...is of great value not only for the UAE but for the whole region," the statement said.
