NHRC: UAE sanctions against Qataris violate human rights

The National Human Rights Committee (QNHRC) has stated that it has begun receiving complaints from Qataris and non-Qataris whose rights have been violated since the UAE imposed a set of sanctions on Qatar.

The Committee has come across many cases which concern rights breaches in relation to education, health, work, and other areas of society. It stated that it intends to refer these cases to international human rights organisations.

According to complaints received by the committee, both Emirati and Qatari citizens have had severe infringments placed upon their right to freedom of movement. One case includes a Qatari woman married to an Emirati citizen being prevented from bringing her child to Qatar with her due to its UAE nationality.

The UAE authorities have clearly contravened rights to family reunification by imposing travel bans on the citizens of Qatar and the UAE, said NHRC.

The committee has called upon the international community and organizations to intervene and stop these human rights violations. They warn that further violations may affect the peace, security and stability of the citizenry inside the UAE.

The Committee has launched a 24 hour crisis hotline to receive and deal with complaints, and is mantaining dialogue with relevant international bodies and governmental human rights organisations to raise the said breaches and to assist clients with their complainants.

On Thursday, the committee will meet with Amnesty International to discuss rights violations caused by the aforementioned decisions .
