Rights group calls on UN Secretary General to intervene to close prisons run by the UAE in Yemen

Arab Organisation for Human Rights in the UK (AOHR UK) has expressed deep concern over "the escalation of crimes perpetrated by the UAE in places under its control in Yemen."

These crimes are threatening the social fabric and civil peace in the country, the rights group said in a statement issued Tuesday.

AOHR UK added that the UAE is present in South Yemen with military and security forces supporting militias, and supervising secret prisons.

"It practices torture and enforced disappearance, and systematically exploits the wealth of Yemen in practices that mimic activities of gangs rather than a state. Its activities go beyond that of an occupier or a colonial entity," the statement reads.

AOHR UK called upon the international community to heed the need to curb the practices of the UAE in Yemen as it poses a threat to stability in the region, and against all efforts to stop the all-encompassing war in Yemen. AOHR UK has also called upon the UN Secretary General on the need to act to release all detainees, and to shut all the prisons run by the UAE and its militias in Yemen.
