US State Department condemns UAE for human rights abuses

In its annual report, the US State Department slammed the UAE and other regimes in the region for committing serious human rights violations.

At a press conference in Washington, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Ambassador Michael Kozak, head of the Office of Democracy and Human Rights in the State Department, detailed a pattern of human rights abuses across the Middle East.

In the case of the UAE, the US State Department noted a spike in cases of arbitrary detention and torture in Emirati prisons, and said there had been a persistent failure on behalf of the Abu Dhabi authorities to investigate such abuses.

US officials also cited the findings of international NGOs who accuse the UAE army of killing unarmed civilians in Yemen and disrupting passages of aid to the country.
