Victims of Torture Group Deplores Human Rights Violations in UAE Prisons

The Geneva-based Victims of Torture Group strongly denounced what it described as “torture cases and human rights violations in the UAE” and expressed “grave concern” over fundamental freedoms in the country.

In a press release, the rights group said that human rights defenders are subjected to serious violations in the UAE including arbitrary detention, ill-treatment, torture, and enforced disappearance.

Detainees are being held and tortured in secret places, exposed to severe beating, electricity shock, and sleep deprivation, the statement reads.

These practices are a violation to international human rights laws and treaties, according to the group.

The statement called for the release all prisoners of conscience in the UAE and for opening an investigation into their torture allegations.
