2016 was a grim one for press freedoms in the UAE where journalists continued to work in a stifling environment of censorship as authorities often intervene directly or indirectly in their work.

The UAE has been accused of repressing its critics using its widely-condemned cybercrime law which violates freedom of expression guaranteed by international laws and conventions.

2016 saw a shrinking space for dissent in the Gulf state where dozens of human rights activists faced harsh sentences while many others are still held behind Emirati bars without charge or trial.
