Mohammed bin Zayed’s Nobel Peace Prize Nomination Makes a Mockery of the Award

"ICFUAE voices strong and unreserved opposition to the nomination of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

Mohammed bin Zayed in no way represents or upholds the values and aims of the Nobel Peace Prize. The United Arab Emirates’ involvement in stoking further conflict in Libya, as well as its role in the devastating war in Yemen mean that Bin Zayed, far from promoting peace, is instrumental in exacerbating two of the world's most urgent humanitarian crises.

At home, meanwhile, Bin Zayed is responsible for the systematic suppression of fundamental freedoms and human rights. Torture, unfair trials and indefinite detention have been used to silence scores of peaceful human rights defenders and critics of the government. Among them are internationally recognised human rights activist Ahmed Mansoor and human rights lawyer Mohammed al-Roken. Imprisoned in inhumane conditions, simply for exercising their right to freedom of expression, their detention does not present a picture of a peaceful government.

It is for these reasons that we believe that Mohammed bin Zayed is completely undeserving of such a prestigious humanitarian award. The mere possibility of someone currently doing so much to damage world peace winning this award makes a mockery of the entire institution of the Nobel Prizes."
