Human Rights Violations in the United Arab Emirates in 2016

There are currently 261 prisoners of conscience in the UAE from 21 different nationalities held amid very difficult detention conditions. 181 are Emirati.

In 2016, 184 individuals from 21 nationalities were sentenced to varying prison terms for their political affiliations. 97% of these prisoners were sentenced over their political affiliations.

3% were also sentenced over their relation with foreign organisations, while 14 were sentenced to life imprisonment or death.

Meanwhile, 300 individuals were arrested for a Facebook or Twitter post, while 21 were taken to court over their social media activism.

These violations place into serious question the sincerity of the UAE's shining image which the UAE authorities are working to promote in international forums.
