Parliamentary questions (8 April 2016)

Answer given by High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini:

The HR/VP is aware of the case of of four Libyan nationals referred to by the Honourable MEP.

The EEAS has been following the case raised by the Honourable MEP in coordination with EU Member States in Brussels and Abu Dhabi. It entertains regular contacts with civil society organisations and human rights defenders and raises individual cases of concern with the relevant authorities.

The EEAS also engages with the UAE authorities in a bi-annual EU-UAE informal Human Rights Working Group. Although this is not a format in which individual cases are normally raised, it provides a framework in which to raise issues relevant to the case in question, such as the balance between law enforcement and fundamental freedoms, the prevention of torture and the right to due process.
