Overview of the Victims of the UAE's Oppressive Regime

In 2013, the UAE authorities jailed dozens of local citizens for plotting to overthrow the government and launched a series of unfair trials against suspected sympathisers of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Among those who were wrongly arrested we mention Ahmed Mohamed Al-Mulla, Badr Al-Bahri, Abdullah Al Helou, and Faycal Chehi. After having already served 2 years of enforced disappearance and arbitrary detention, they were convicted with 15 other Yemenis for creating and establishing a branch of "the Muslim Brotherhood". They faced several state charges, including the collection of donations and funds without prior authorisation from the competent authority.

All of the four human rights activists were condemned to 3 years in prison.

On the other hand, Syrian resident in the UAE, Mohamed Az, was also one of the victims of the UAE oppressive regime and he was sentenced to 15 years in prison on the charge of supporting a terrorist organisation. Mohamed was kept in secret detention for four months and he was forced to confess things he didn't do under extreme torture.

Other cases include the case of the Egyptian prisoner Mossab Ahmed Abdelaziz who was sentenced to 3 years in prison to be followed by deportation.

He was convicted of running an international group in the UAE affiliated to the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood without the authorities’ permission; co-operating with an illegal secret organisation whose objectives were to seek the takeover of power in the country and oppose the fundamental principles on which it is based; and gathering funds for this organisation with knowledge of its objectives.

Unfortunately, the list goes on and it is indeed still too long, but this a small overview of some victims.  We call on the release of all prisoners of conscience in the UAE and hope that justice will find its way to them.
