Defense Lawyers Share Closing Arguments in Last Hearing of the Eldarats’ Trial Ahead of Verdict

On Tuesday the defense of Kamal and Momed Eldarat, in combination with others currently being tried for the same crimes, shared their final arguments in the trial. Today was the final court appearance in the trial of the two American businessmen who have been illegally detained in the UAE for nearly 600 days.

The judges announced today that the final verdict is scheduled for May 30th.

In the last hearing, the UAE took an uncommon and unexpected move and withdrew all terrorism charges against Kamal and Mohamed Eldarat and filed two new charges, one criminal and one misdemeanor, brought under the UAE penal code, against the brother and father.

“Today in court, my father and brother’s lawyers gave an impassioned plea for their freedom, underscoring the gravity of the due process violations each have faced in their nearly two year ordeal,” said Amal Eldarat, Kamal’s daughter who returned home to the United States to lead her family’s effort to free her family members. “My father and brother are innocent of all charges the UAE State Security prosecutor has attempted to bring against them. It is time to finally end this horrible time in my family’s life, and allow my father and brother to come home.”
