Three years ago, terminally ill Alia Abdel Nour dies of deliberate medical negligence in UAE hospital

On this day three years ago, Emirati prisoner of conscience Alia Abdulnoor, 42, passed away in UAE custody after years of deliberate medical negligence at the hands of the Emirati authorities.

In a case described as ‘marred by due process violations’,  Alia was arrested in 2015 and disappeared for six months without being allowed to communicate with her family, and without disclosing any information about her fate.

Diagnosed with cancer, UAE authorities refused to grant her necessary chemotherapy and adequate medical care.

Abdel Nour was sentenced to 10-years in jail in the UAE over for collecting money to Syrian refugees on social media following the 2011 Syrian crisis.

On top of this, Alia was subjected to torture and inhumane and degrading treatment. According to testimonies smuggled out of al-“Wathba” prison in 2018, prison warders hit, kicked and tied her up on multiple occasions.

On the third anniversary of her death, we call for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death and for the parties responsible for her abuse and neglect to be held to account accordingly.

We also demand the immediate and unconditional release of all remaining political prisoners in the UAE.
